A guide to choosing and brewing loose leaf chai
At Steep Mountain Tea we have a wide range of chai, from traditional Masala Chai to our newest herbal Forager Chai with chaga mushrooms. Whether you like to start or end your day with chai or have an afternoon pick-me-up, we have a blend that will satisfy your needs.
To maximize the health benefits of chai, consider making it from scratch using our high-quality loose leaf blends instead of only ordering the highly sweetened Starbucks Pumpkin Chai or other mass produced Chai from big corporations which are usually loaded with sugar and preservatives and use a much lower quality tea.
If you are trying to cut back on or eliminate sugar we recommend trying Vanilla Spice Chai as it has a naturally sweet profile from the vanilla and cinnamon chips and uses a milder, big leafed black tea.
If you are sensitive to caffeine and want to drink chai in the afternoons or evenings we have two comforting options:
Storm Castle Chai - a rooibos based blend with cacao nibs and warming spices. This chai does not contain ginger so it is smooth and comforting.
Forager Chai - A rich and earthy herbal chai designed to enhance your body with vitamin C, warming spices and all-around superstar chaga mushrooms.
For those seeking adventure try our truly unique blends you won't find anywhere else:
Backcountry Chai - The smoky Lapsang Souchong black tea in this unique blend imparts an almost caramel-like flavor and is blended with both green and roasted Yerba Maté as well as rooibos and cinnamon chips.
Speed Goat Chai - A nod to the regional nickname of the speedy pronghorn antelope, this earthy pepper-forward, yerba maté chai is the perfect way to put a little pep in your step.
Flathead Chai - Cooling peppermint added to a traditional chai reminds us of taking a refreshing dip in the crystal clear waters of Montana's Flathead Lake and warms you up just as the beauty of the Flathead region warms the soul.
Ginger Green Chai - The balance of classic cardamom and ginger chai spices with a twist - made with Chinese green tea instead of black tea! Try this one without milk for a light, refreshing option and to reap the benefits of extra polyphenols in green tea.
These are the basic steeping instructions for our chai that we use at our Teahouse in Bozeman, MT:
1 tablespoon of loose leaf chai
4oz hot milk or milk substitute of your choice
8oz hot water
1 tsp cane sugar (optional)
1 tsp honey (optional)
Steep for 6 minutes
